A chapter is an association of young students and researchers, promoting the dissemination of knowledge in science.
Our student chapters are born inside the Physics Department of PoliMi, with the mission to disseminate knowledge in photonics and nanotechnology, and connect students of Engineering Physics with real-world scientists!
We take you to our laboratories, we help you find your (dream!) master thesis project, we organize events to show you what an actual Physics Engineer looks like in real life… sometimes they are like your professors, sometimes like other alumni working in tech, finance, consultancy, and more. We help you build a connection with them!
There is an entire world of possibilities beyond your books,
you sometimes struggle to see.

The Optical Society (Optica, formerly OSA), the European Physical Society (EPS) and the international society for optics and photonics (SPIE) are the international non-profit organizations which financially support our student chapters and their events, offering innumerable opportunities to students and early careers.
Among hundreds of chapters all around the world, we represent Milan, Italy.
• Outreach seminars: talking about science, to everyone.
• Guided visits to the laboratories of the Physics Department of Politecnico di Milano.
A format we invented and we are very proud of:
• “Speed Date with Research“: 35 speakers, ~100 students, two really fun moderators and 120 minutes. A fun way to get to know all research activities at the Physics Department of Polimi in a form of a… speed date!
• We organize courses (e.g., how to use LaTeX to write your thesis!), conferences, technical seminars, workshops, roundtables with start-ups and entrepreneurs
A format we invented and we are very proud of:
• “Physics Talks”: wonder how a Physics Engineer looks like in real life? A series of seminars in which alumni of Engineering Physics share their professional and personal life experience, and hopefully inspire the students for their future careers in Academia, Industry, Tech and Business!
• Student leadership experience: annual conference where student chapters from all over the world meet for knowledge sharing and networking.
• Traveling lecturer: host outstanding professionals who are open to traveling to your university to share their expertise with you.
Beyond science, we care about our scientific community.
Our chapter advocates for ethical research and equal representation in STEM, particularly for historically underrepresented categories (LGBTQIA+ community, gender, demographics, social backgrounds).
• Seminars and webinars about research ethics, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in STEM.
What could be better than stepping into a real physics laboratory to gain a broader perspective on the work of a researcher in optics and photonics?
